721 5th Avenue - Trump Tower NYC / Northeast corner of 5th Avenue and 56th St. Construction completed in 1983.
Previous location of Bonwitt Twiller, a consolidation of three New York Bonwitt Twiller stores, opened September of 1930 into the building previously built and occupied by Stewart and Company.
Previous location of Stewart and Company, an extremely high end ladies fashion store. Bad timing... store opened 13 days before the 29 October 1929 stock market crash. Stewart and Co filed for bankruptcy in the spring of 1930. Former site of Daly / Gerard mansion.
In 1899 William Waldorf Astor leased the mansion to Marcus Daly, of The Anaconda" copper mine fortune. Daly signed a ten-year lease but died one year later. Five months after Daly's death one of his daughters, Mary, married James W. Gerard. The Gerard's became the principle residents along with Margaret Daly until 1912 and 1933 respectively. The former Daly / Gerard mansion was rented out, used for war relief in 1916, used as an art gallery and residence, then the structure was demolished in 1928 to make way for the art deco-styled Stewart and Company department store.
Site of mansion built by William Waldorf Aster between 1889 - 1898.
Land undeveloped until circa 1889. William Waldorf Astor, along with George Vanderbilt, had purchased a significant amount of property along 5th Avenue to block the incursion of commerce into the 5th Avenue mansion district below 59th Street
In the "Alex, I'll take That's The Second Biggest Rabbit Hole I've Seen This Week category":
The Gerards moved from the Daly Mansion on the corner of 5th Avenue and 56th Street (the house number at that time was 725 - but is the same site of the now 721 5th Ave Trump Tower) to 1014 5th Avenue. Gerard died in 1951, his wife, Mary, died in 1956. The mansion was purchased by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1959, renovated, opening as the Goethe House in 1961.
In 1969 Goethe House merged with the German Cultural institute - then known as Goethe-Institute New York. In 2008 the New York City Fire Department deemed the mansion unsafe as a public space, and the space has been vacant ever since. A spokesman for the German government stated there were plans to renovate the building and loan it to an American non-profit to run it as a transatlantic space for collaboration and ideas.
Really? One of the last of the grand old private homes on 5th Avenue. Sits derelict. Owned by the German government. Plans to renovate and "loan it" to an "American NGO. Closed by the New York City Fire Department in 2008.
Not only has this war, temporal beyond belief, been going on for a long, long time, the battles are fought in plain site and we have forever never seen or been aware of them until now.
We'll isn't that interesting
