As far as we know, gravity, which isn't well understood but is theorized to be a force caused by a huge mass moving through spacetime.
The layers and layers of air create higher pressure the closer to the surface you get. Similarly to how when you dive deeper underwater you get higher and higher pressure due to all the water above.
I'm suspicious of the entire concept of gravity, as we are taught it anyway. It COULD be a grift that sort of fills in the blanks of physics and mathematics that we don't fully understand. Then we apply it to astronomy and convince ourselves we know how the universe works.
Understandable...there is an argument for density between different matter causing "sinking" but that would only explain within our atmosphere, not space or why the planets revolve around the sun.
