Total US power consumption has basically been flat for the last 20 years

Makes sense. LED lighting and energy efficient fluorescent lighting makes a huge difference. Newer energy efficient appliances and air conditioners make a huge difference. Houses are built differently to be more energy efficient. Most homes and businesses have double-pane windows.
It also doesn't help that the U.S. lost our manufacturing base to overseas competitors. That saved a lot of electrical power... but cost the U.S. in lost jobs.
I wonder if this ties to population growth.
The page I got this from had a 'per capita' consumption chart too and it clearly showed average consumption going down over time.
I think the per capita for the US is currently lower than since before the 90's
Like Retaining H2O said, a big part of it is we started using devices that consume less power, like Led lighting and more efficient appliances.
Good. Now add China and India and Saudi Arabia.
Then do the same chart by usage/person.
We've been good boys and girls and reduced our energy consumption. But we still get singled out and blamed for ruining the environment with toxic CO2. China built thousands of ghost cities with apartments for 64 million that are all vacant and decaying in the elements. But somehow that isn't wasteful.
