I think that, if China were to commit troops to help Russia fight in Ukraine... it wouldn't be subtle. China would arrive in a BIG way and everyone in the world would know it.
China is smart enough to know that keeping other nations off-balance is to their advantage. Keep them guessing by providing a few vehicles, a few observers and make sure the Chinese flag is displayed for all to see.
Good point, do it just enough to keep their everyone honest to their cards on hand. They could always spin it off as they are there to provide humanitarian support.
Nothing can stop NATO's Army of Ukraine. I've seen the news reports. After they take Moscow, it's on to Beijing.

I expect the Chinese want to train their troops on the field and are only too willing to join in.
Why not, NATO troops are fighting in Ukraine, albeit with Ukrainian uniforms.
