Well, America wants to supply Europe with much, much more expensive gas and Germany wants to go completely green so there.. FIXED. Expensive, unreliable gas. Just what Germany (Europe) needs. Sounds like a match made in the pits of hell.
Exactamundo!
Why not repair it instead of whine about it never being used again???? Because the whining sells news. I've been in the pipeline installation and repair business for 37 years. This pipeline is easily repairable. Are oil pipelines in the gulf of Mexico or off the California coast abandoned with they have a rupture? NO, they are repaired as quickly as possible.
If Germany is afraid this pipeline won't be used again, it would be due to politics, and nothing else. The inside of the pipeline as well as the outside of the pipeline have coatings that protect against corrosion.
Could they maybe just blow air into it to help keep the water out? Maybe include some anti corrosion material. Don't think they would need so high a pressure as the gas required.
Well, constructing something under water or laying completed pipe under water is different than water unintentionally getting into it.
See: Flint. Where changing the water supply source changed the pH and corroded the coating in the pipes and caused lead to leach into the water supply.
Interior piping that is never meant to touch a certain type of water is different than exterior piping that is.
Yes, understand it's quite different from an overland line.
Maybe pump fresh water through it.
Cap it and put in new pipe.
Agree, I figure this could somehow become a white elephant in a couple of years though.

Now seems to be the critical time. Keep hearing about new sources of gas and oil that could be available, and of course Europe could revert to using coal and nuclear. Nord Stream may not be needed fairly soon.
