I had understood that a large part of this "trans acceptance" movement is being pushed by Big Pharma and other groups. What hadn't clicked in my brain is that all those people having those surgeries may well end up addicted to painkillers (opiates) for the rest of their lives.
Just from the pain of surgeries alone, they would need pain meds. Add in the broken personality that got them there and the relief opiates would bring to the suffering in their minds and you can see why Pharma would be thrilled to have them join up.
And it's a hell of a lot easier to throw pills at something than it is to put these people in institutions and actually try to help them.
Oh, sure. I think for a lot of the trans people that I've read about, the whole idea of therapy falls by the wayside after the surgeries (surgery was the Magical Cure, after all!) but the drugs will be forever.

You left out the entire consoling and psychiatry industries, the latter which also includes pharmaceuticals.
