Ice crystals in jet exhaust are real. They cause streaks in the sky. They are made of ice.

I saw one today that was smaller and was dissipating quickly compared to the 4+ huge ones that were going across the entire sky. Would that be different sized engines? It's weird how some stay for hours and some fade over minutes.

Depends on the air temp. And humidity and wind.

And the big ones would be from large 4 engine planes.

Contrails (vapour) disappear while the plane is in sight. Chemtrails remain and dissipate into broad ribbons, turning the sky white. After a while you get unnatural cloud formations.

I've seen them on hot days, cold days, humid days, and very dry days.

The altitude at which contrails are generated is high enough that ice crystals form regardless of the weather down on the ground.
