1. there are a million wind up timers on the market, of all various shapes and sizes... you'd think if one were trying to build an explosive device they would use something small and something cheap.

instead the device was built using a huge bright white timer.

IMO this was chosen on purpose to play well to a camera... the device builder wanted to ensure that when pictures were taken the audience would see the timer and associate it with old school cartoonish movie prop device.

2. wind up timers are good for an hour, the device was planted 17 hours before they claim it was intended to detonate. how in the fuck does a 1 hour egg timer get set for 17 hours later?
