He is a performer, who did an action that would be considered pretty badass in the context of a rock and roll/metal concert. His intent was to bite the head off of the object thrown at him. The result was he bit the head off of a real bat.

Further, maybe you shouldn't be slinging around 'retarded' if you're super worried about how 'metal' someone is.
