Linux (I'm using Mint version) It can be had for free. I sent $10 to get a loaded thumb drive. I'm over 75 and figured it out. There are tutorials online for individual installation jobs. Be rid of microsoft. Microsoft was aware through Gmail that I was switching and tried to discourage me from doing it. Ha.
You can try using Libre OpenOffice. Not the same quality, but should do for simple documents. In future you can post this kinda stuff on General Chat
Also what I was going to recommend. Notepad+ is also not too bad for some simple things.

I use Open Office. Free and similar to Microsoft Office.
Wordpad comes with Windows. You can do basic formatting, insert pictures and such. Type Wordpad in the search bar and you should find it.
