Within my school board district, nobody is allowed to address the school board(sb) unless you first send a request through the Superintendent's office for his approval. If he likes your proposal he will put you on the agenda, if he does not think your ideas have merit you will not be on the agenda. Nor is there a way to address the sb during the meeting. If you raise your hand, even to ask for clairity on something said, you will be called out and told to speak after the meeting is adjourned. Plus, as I found out today, you cannot approach a school board member at his place of work, on the street, or even call the member without first going through the Superintendent's office. I cannot go to my elected officials place of business and ask a few questions about my school system. Hmmm..something does not smell right here. But I do understand their concern for their safety and their time while on the job is for their employers. But, when they own the business and THEY said come by later and "I will chat with you", and then tell the school Superintendent about this encounter and the Superintendent then called me and told me I could not contact my elected school board members, for some reason the hair on the back of my neck began to stand up.
After last week's SB meeting I presented to each member a letter I wrote stating that it would be a good idea to bring back cursive writing to the school district in order to bring up the reading comprehension scores from 44% to some where higher. The gentleman (SB member) I went and talked with stated to me that he read my letter, "well, I read a few lines of it", is what he actually said, so that tells me he does not care to even read two pages of paper that a concerned citizen offers up to him. Instead he goes to the Superintendent and complains that citizens are showing up at his business and asking questions about the school district. Hmmm.
I chatted with the Superintendent for about a half hour. During this call I felt he was defensive and maybe even worried that someone would be contacting SB members and trying to go around his authority. I think the electors have the ultimate say in what his authority is, right? IDK, but that is how I feel.
Look, if you haven't read my previous posts, all I want is for the kindergarteners and 1st graders to begin using a pencil to write the alphabet and then graduate to writing in cursive. Studies have shown that this simple everyday practice opens neural pathways within the kids' brains and thus, the reading comprehension scores should go up. Not a hard thing to implement, yet going outside of the normal channels seems to have sparked concern within the SB. Am I wrong? IDK, but asking a SB member to consider putting a pencil in kids hands isn't too far out of the mainstream.
Oh, and then the Superintendent stated that cursive is taught in 3rd grade. I then began wondering if that were so, why do the high school students not even know how to write their names in cursive? He was more interested in teaching the kids how to keyboard so they could integrate into the university system when they graduate. I told him I had no problem with the use of computers. I repeatedly told him that using cursive opens up neural pathways, and that was something he didn't seem to want to consider in our conversation. Computers are the future and present, the pencil is so old fashioned, I guess. I wish I would have asked him how the kids would communicate if this country ever lost its electrical grid to a EMP.
Thanks for reading. Hope some of you will comment, whether good or bad, it might help me understand how and why elected school board members are so trusting of a Superintendent who is heck bent on not wanting to increase the school's overall reading comprehension grades, but thinks throwing money into building and other non-educaitonal endeavors is the wave of the future.
What do you suggest for a single working mother and can’t afford private school tuition?
That is so right and so wrong on so many different levels. I chuckled. Thanks!
Is that all ya got, lol?
Of course it is ultimately the best, but it's ridiculous to act as though someone can just waltz into the 'marriage store' and get hitched.
Baby daddy beat the shit out of her, is out of her life and she is not looking for a husband. Her sons are her only focus. I guess women can snap their fingers And just conjure up a husband that will take care of them, huh? If only life was so simple we could fix all our problems by just finding a spouse, lol. Yep, sounds so simple.
Getting a hot, well-paying job skill that can be used at home.
I have a young woman who works for me, two boys, on her own. Very hard worker, I pay her well and she just started college online in January. She is terrified she will be forced to poison her boys next fall with the Covid bullshit jab, which she hates.
Tell her to bone up on the Constitution. It's all she needs as its whole purpose is to guarantee our inalienable rights. I'm trying to remember the best articles to sight. Seems like 9 and 14.10 come to my remembrance, but it's not long and she can read it and easily see for herself which points to raise if it comes to that.
The OP doesn't have kids in the school, they're trying to do something for the kids that are stuck in the system at least.
The public school system in America is dead. They just haven’t had the funeral yet.
Years ago, the local school board put a bond issue on the ballot that would have raised the real estate taxes on my small commercial building by 40%. I organized a resistance movement, held a meeting and two school board members attended to see what I was up too. They didn’t like anyone fighting against their tax increase, which was the third one they were requesting in 10 years. We defeated the bond by 5 votes out of 1,500 Votes and were they ever pissed.
The next year the superintendent just borrowed money on a 20 year note, completely bypassing voters. They don’t give a shit what the taxpayers want, they just steal your money to line the pockets of teachers and administrators. It’s a joke.
Are you teaching your kids? My grandmother drilled me mercilessly when I was 5.
I have a 23YO home schooled son. I moved to this school district three years ago and then retired. Built a house with my own two hands, along with the help of my wife and son. I was just curious about how this particular school district scores compared to other towns so I went onto the web and typed in some sort of search criteria and what came back was the school district had a 44% reading comprehension score out of a possible 100%. This struck me odd along with a rumor that a school building remodel was $20M over budget. I found out the $20M was an extreme over exaggeration. Only $700K over budget. But never got a good answer on why only a 44% reading comprehension rate. Been trying to "push" getting cursive writing back into this school system for the past month and my threads have showed what I've experienced. Read the first part, part 2 and part 3. I'm not mean when I talk to school people, just trying to figure out how the game is played, who the players are, and how to approach those people. Looks like everything has to go through the Superintendent, and for some reason I don't think that is "right".

Sounds like you need to run for School Board.
Public schools need to be shut down. We can start with school vouchers until we have the damn Deep State out of the economy and no longer taxing us to death, and then education paid by parents. Home schooling, home school co-ops, charter/private schools. Shut the bullshit down.
Great post
I wish I could give you concrete advice on what step to take next. Not ever having dealt with this group, I have virtually no knowledge. What I do know is that every elected official in the USA takes an oath to the Constitution, so you might be able to get through to them that way. They are their to do your bidding, not the other way around. It seems to me that this guy and his cronies may have gotten themselves into a cushy and comfy situation and don't want anybody threatening what they've got going (possibly graft.) I see unemotionNOLE mentioned bondsforthewin.com. That subject was talked about extensively here a while back and you may be able to search for some of those old threads after you've checked out the sight. Good luck. Thanks for posting this and please do continue to keep us posted. You are doing God's work here. Please continue to be brave and do the right thing.
Thank you for the advice. I checked into it. It might be useful to another person who is a concerned citizen with different issues towards the school. This is a great gift from our Forefathers.. Appreciation is not a stong enough word for what you've showed me.
Did the superintendent ever stop to consider that a child that can't read, also can't use a computer?? 🙄
Look up bonds for the win. Also run for the board and propose changes that would stop the communication block.
Cursive is so important!!! How will our children read the Declaration of Independence or the constitution if it is wipes from the internet??
This sentence was in the letter I sent to the school board. I stated that if the electricity ever goes out how will the kids read the original Declaration of Independence and know what their rights are? It was telling that the school board member I met with didn't even read my letter, much less care about what was in it. I don't care about any type of agenda the board or administrators have, I just want the best education that my tax dollars can give the kids. If that is to tickle their gray cells with a wee bit of cursive writing, I feel it is well worth the effort. Too bad I am not getting cooperation from the school. The Superintendent told me today that they teach cursive in third grade. One year of specialized writing yet I seriously doubt they will remember how to write it in a few years. But practice makes perfect, huh? All I heard from the Superintendent was they kids need to use the computer in order to fit into the college and university learning formula. Writing in the upper schools is not a requirement. I don't care about that. What I care about is the kids learning with their brains at an early age so maybe their grades can improve.
I admire your perseverance. Keep going my friend!! The only way they win is if we give up!
School board members are elected not appointed. Would a recall petition for lack of responsiveness to the citizens get their attention. Always enjoy your postings on your experiences. And yes, I agree with you on cursive. We want well rounded, educated citizens - we can dream!
The school board needs their butts kicked out. Who do they think they work for?
The Superintendent? IDK, I've always thought folks who were elected into a position were to answer to the people, but then again, I took History decades ago. Things might have changed in the interim.
That shit is fuqed up man. Homeschool if you can. Find a pod. You may be surprised.
I believe you are referring to a public official surety bond. Bond payouts require certain conditions take place and will not pay for specific Listed exclusions.
Does Any one have access to a copy of this type of surety bond they can share?
I think Tracy Beanz did a whole thing (how to) on this. Contact her. Or do a search. The interview I heard was two moms who did some research and challenged the board with the bonds and won. They were telling anyone who would listen and had the information on their site (with instructions) for free.
I think you have me confused with someone else. What doubt am I spreading, you make no sense. All public official bonds are surety, or three party bonds ( the official, the surety-insurer and the public being protected) bonds are not insurance, they are guarantees. There, I fixed it for you.
