This then led to the ban on R-12 and its replacement R134 was born and soon took over the market. Dupont owns both patents, and the R12 was set to expire in 1979. They owned the R134 patent as well and had a lock on the market after R-12 was banned.
So yes this seems like the way business is done. As far as the changing size of the Ozone hole, I would guess it follows the amount of sunspot activity and solar flares, like the climate does.
