That's the shortest version of that joke I've seen. I like the longer version where a man goes to hell and Satan gives him a choice of two places he has to spend eternity, one where the people are on their heads, and the other where they are waste deep in the foulest mixture of sewage, pus, etc., but are all drinking coffee. When Satan asks the guy where he wants to spend eternity, he says, "Well, I do like coffee, and I think I could get used to the smell", so poof!, the guy is standing with all the others drinking coffee. Then a loudspeaker announces, "Coffee break is over, back on your heads!".
Ha! That's a great version!
My father often told another one about a guy in heaven getting to choose a cross - each cross representing the various hardships, sins, sadnesses of others, and after trying to hoist a few, found one the he felt he'd be able to carry. Turns out, he chose his own.
I can't tell it like dad did... I've tried. My father I can only describe as an old-world "secular-christian" (my made up term). He's kind of a leather and nails grumpy cowboy type, who has traditional Christian values but doesn't claim to be... Anything. Christian, atheist, whatever. Just focused on living life.
On the rare times we'd get a taste for belief, it was usually in the form of jokes like these, with the moral of: life isn't so bad, if God is there he loves us, and of he's not better love each other, and when you fuck up best to make things better.
Miss that guy.
I lost my father in 1988, but it was a cousin who told me the "two places in Hell" joke. The cousin died about 8 years ago. I'm 65 now, and what is sad for me, is when I watch any of the old TV shows from the 60's and early 70's, most of the people in them are dead now. Jazz is my favorite music, and there are almost no living jazz artists who I listen to. My mother is 91, and all her friends have died, and her favorites from the movies when she was growing up are long gone. Sorry to be a downer. I hope the Trump statement tonight is uplifting.
