Why would you need 3,000 to 5,000 people anyway for twitter? Engineers I understand, but what were the other roles??
Empire building within Twatter management, mostly.
For managers, power and prestige are determined by the number of people that are directly and indirectly reporting to them.
This gives them a strong incentive to inflate their head counts...
EM's moves are a brilliant way to drastically thin the herd while keeping the people that are essential to the company.
Takes a lot of eyes to do censorship.
