Well... they weren't entirely wrong. The political hero worship and tribalism is a threat to the Republic. They are right to be leery of Trump. I mean we all should.
However... when the corporations and government support your protest, you aren't the resistance. But I would point that out after you establish the common ground of acknowledging that we shouldn't implicitly trust ANY politician and don't be afraid to call them out for their hero worship of Obama, if they happen to have been a supporter.
Implicit trust can only be given to our ideals - which are generally and eloquently expressed in the Declaration (We hold these truths to be self-evident . . .) and further elaborated in more specific, and therefore lesser, form in the Constitution.
