Not a recent event but noteworthy, if only there were more like him. Gurkhas are the best.
Copied the first 2 pp from Wikipedia. I had never heard of Ghurkas.
The Gurkhas or Gorkhas (/ˈɡɜːrkə, ˈɡʊər-/), with endonym Gorkhali [ɡorkʰali]), are soldiers native to the Indian Subcontinent, chiefly residing within Nepal and some parts of Northeast India.[1][2]
The Gurkha units are composed of Nepalis and Nepali Speaking Indian People and are recruited for the Nepali Army (96,000),[3] Indian Army (42,000), British Army (4,010),[4] Gurkha Contingent Singapore, Gurkha Reserve Unit Brunei, UN peacekeeping forces and in war zones around the world.[5] Gurkhas are closely associated with the khukuri, a forward-curving knife, and have a reputation for military prowess. Former Indian Army Chief of Staff Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw once stated that: "If a man says he is not afraid of dying, he is either lying or he is a Gurkha."[6]
They undergo grueling tests to qualify, need to be super fit.
My father lugged a Bren gun around, amongst other things, in Burma during WWII.
He said the Gurkhas would take their curved knives and crawl into the Japanese positions and quietly cut their throats at night.
He said they were the best soldiers he ever met.
I thought they were pickles.
