My wife teaches high school. The kids can't read or write cursive. She has made it a point to teach them. She says, "If you can't read cursive, how can you read the Constitution?", "How can you have your own signature?". She has a set of cursive lettering that goes up above the chalkboard from her elementary school teaching days because her kids all want to learn it.
I’m sure they had this in mind when they stopped teaching cursive. Also in NC a child can’t be held back more than twice. I’ll have my first grandchild soon. I’ve already said my grandkids will know how to write cursive. I feel like their parents would teach them but just in case they don’t I’ll teach them.
They still hold kids back in NC? Most places won't do it at all. Where I am, they will never do it, even if the parents beg for it. That's actually the one and only thing the school board won't bend for the parents.
I don’t have a school age child. A friend was telling me about a child she knows in elementary school. His parents don’t care and wasn’t taking him to school. He’s been held back twice and that’s the limit. When my child was in middle school, early 2000’s, there was a kid at school that was at least 17.

That is a recipe for sexual abuse by a minor.
How stupid do you have to be to not be able to read cursive? It's just loopy print
