The array might need to be pretty big to supply all the power you need to not need it from the grid. Worse if your location doesn't get enough sun. The arrays on house rooftops only supply a portion of the total consumption and only during the day when it's sunny.
"Only during the day when its sunny" you must not have heard of these things called batteries.
As for size, you need about 4kwh to power an average sized house, which is 40 100w panels (32x26), well go 50 just for extra power, if they were all side by side itd still only be 133ft, could be half if you do 2 rows. So a 65ft by 5ft area would power the average home.
Sure its not cheap but then your off the grid for good and dont have to directly pay for power anymore
