When I was young, I moonlighted in a kitchen for an Italian restaurant. The owner was an old school Italian. One of the chefs had a severe upper respiratory infection that continued after seeing a doctor and getting prescribed antibiotics. The owner had the chef come in to work after speaking to him about his condition. The kitchen staff was there when he dragged himself in. The owner handed him a small glass bottle with slightly yellowish liquid inside. He had the chef tilt back his head and he placed about three or four drops in each nostril. He then had him snort the stuff in. The ensuing dance was as comically as a Jerry Lewis film. Tears streaming out of both eyes and a blast of nasty stuff comes blowing out of his nose. The sneezing and crying continued for about 3-5 minutes. The chef complaining about the burning. After a while it settled down, but he kept a steady stream of greenish yellow snot flowing from his nose. The owner told him to go back home and take a nap. Since he could now breathe, it was far easier for him. He came back that evening ready for work. I asked what was in the bottle, the owner said it was garlic oil. It was a family remedy that he said came from the old country. I haven't had a cold like that before and it didn't look like fun, but 15 minutes of that versus four days of miserable sickness. I have always filed it away for future reference. The chef also said he couldn't smell anything but garlic for a day. I have also read an article about garlic oil being effective against Anthrax, but I didn't book mark that, as it was many years ago. However, a quick search of the NIH database found an article in reference to gastrointestinal anthrax.

Garlic is also an extremely potent antibacterial.
