It's a very dense material. Hard to penetrate. It's also layered with ceramic layers to defeat HEAT rounds.

I thought they werent going to send Abrams with the depleted uranium armor and all the latest bells and whistles. Ive read that they were building "stock" Abrams from scratch specifically for shipment to Ukraine.

That is correct. They will not be sending tanks with the same kind of armor. Probably solid steel.
