Years ago I was lucky enough to schedule an appointment with and meet the late Dr Rufino Mauricio, Director of the Federated States of Micronesia Office of National Archives, Culture & Historic Preservation. I met with him to discuss the ancient ruins of Nan Madol of which he was the world's leading expert. He told me a story that day of decades earlier finding a very large vertebrae (in an underground room at the ruins) and sending it to the Smithsonian for analysis. They contacted him months later saying it was only a whale vertebrae. they also said they were going to keep it.
