I live an hour south of there in WV (never been there) and have not heard one word from anyone about even the derailment let alone the environmental impact of the chemicals.
I have relatives, probably due east on the Ohio side from you. I emailed them and they responded with, yeah, heard about it...why are you asking? I went to the website for FOX in Steubenville, not a mention of it, plenty of old stories, nothing on this.
Wow! The complete lack of awareness reminds me of when there were those suspicious fires in California where the house would be reduced to ash and the car would nothing but a pool of melted steel, running down the driveway, but everything else around it was left untouched, such as mailbox, trash cans, trees, grass, for sale signs, etc.
My niece and her husband lived in that area and had to evacuate for a time, but ultimately were OK. I asked her what she thought about the strange way the fires were just incinerating the homes and leaving the trees, grass and swimming pools alone.
She replied, "Well, they say that sparks just jump from house to house!"
Can you believe her answer?? No critical thinking at all.
Yep. Boggles the mind that the people right there cannot see what is in front of their faces. This niece of mine was class valedictorian of her high school and went on to get a college degree, so her lack of critical thinking really shocked me.

Car tires burned to nothing, rim's melted, yet asphalt roads pretty much just fine ?

That is really weird.
