Illinois is the same. Only Chicago and belleville/east st Louis are the main blue areas, holding the rest of the state hostage. Michigan is similar with Detroit, while MI as a whole is very conservative. I wouldn't be surprised if all the blue states are just blue cities, not states.

We moved out of IL 13 years ago. Ones of the best decisions ever. Hubby grew up in Belleville and I had a patient's grandmother there tell me she was coerced every election cycle to vote democratic or lose her job (she was a sweet African American Christian, but couldn't afford to lose her job so she went along)
