This ain't new. They do it, we do it too. Always have, always will likely. I was in the Navy 86-92 and there was ALWAYS a Russian intel ship off the coast, 12 miles out, of Hawaii (Pearl) monitoring our comings and goings.
Yeah, I guess, and maybe we even had submarines off each other's coasts. By the way, if you want to read a fascinating book about submarine spying activities in the Cold War, read "Blind Man's Bluff." Very interesting stories for those of us in the Navy and Marines.
I'll tell ya a true story how the game is played and always has been. I had a close friend that was onboard USS Fox during the same time I was in. They went 12 miles off the coast of Vladivostok, dead silent. Once they hit 12 miles out their captain ordered everything lit up, comms, radar, deck lights, EVERYTHING. Then he started a stopwatch. About 30 minutes after they lit up a pair of MIGs flew over. He stopped his watch, gave the order to shut everything down and said lets go home.
It's a game. We are all players in it. We do the same shit they do, daily. Don't get me wrong, sometimes it gets damn scary. I seen some shit during my time that to this day scares the shit out of me. One wrong decision, one wrong move....And now we have an idiot in the White House.

Serious question: Are Russia and China allies?
I've been talking to a lot of ppl lately who are convinced given U.S. weakness in the white house and fractured MIL, that Russia and China might strike. But I keep saying I don't think Russia/Putin are allies w/ China at all.
Also, the joint naval exercises justify a yes answer.
Anything is possible. I go for the prophetic, and George Washington's Valley Forge vision showed essentially a ROW (rest of world) vs. USA.
And there's a Christian missionary with many supernatural testimonies, Henry Gruber, who had a vision of Russian ships carrying Chinese soldiers. That was back in the 90's when he had the vision, only indicating it was in the future.
On the strictly pragmatic side, even if Putin is sincerely allied with Trump, i.e. beyond mere convenience, that doesn't mean that Russia doesn't have its own DS warmongers. By all accounts, our military is infiltrated, and for that reason it appears weaker than normal. And in realpolitik, Russia may have a lot to gain by allowing China to expand across the Pacific rather than into Siberia or Kazakhstan. It's clear (well, reports indicate: who really knows) that China and Russia have operating agreements in Ukraine and SE Europe.
"Anything is possible" absolutely true. I don't think Putin has ANY love for this Biden admin. Xi on the other hand seemingly loves Biden bc he has Biden on a leash. Trump in office, flip the lovefest (Putin liking Trump, Xi despising him).

Good question. Politics makes for strange bedfellows, but then so does war. After all, the Soviet Union was our ALLLY during WWII, even though we knew that one day we would be in opposition to them. They were just geographically and strategically positioned to the east of Germany, so in the spirit of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend," they became an uneasy ally.
The same might be happening between Russia and China, a temporary truce while they lick their chops over destroying a mutual enemy of the past 70 years or so. I just hope our military is up to the task of dealing with this.

Your first sentence is correct. Can you back up the second sentence with a link? This is something I was not aware of, nor had ever seen in print anywhere.
EDIT: I guess a related question would be, "WHY"? Why would Israel target European cities instead of their Middle East hostile neighbors?
