I just went on you tube to play Lynyrd Skynyrd-God and Guns after I saw your post. I didn't know. Gary Rossington died Sunday. He was the last original member. I'm sad. I grew up on Lynyrd Skynyrd. Yeah, I'm old. I think I was 17 when their plane crashed. I was devastated.

I'm new to the guitar, (after 41 years behind the drum kit) and, I'm presently learning the opening guitar riff to "Simple Man", my favorite Skynyrd tune.
My favorite too. I would drive around in my 67 mustang (turquoise) and be blasting it from my 8 track player. It was the last song on the tape.

The Orthodox Study Bible, even if you're not Orthodox this is still one of the best versions out there.
It uses the NKJV as the base, while correcting some of the errors in the New Testament to be more accurate. For the Old Testament, it uses the Greek Septuagint translated into English over the Masoretic Text due to the removed Messianic Prophecies and references to Christ in the Old Testament.
I can tell you it's not the NIV, which is what I normally use. But I have one that is over 30 years old, and it was a little more accurate then. And its easy for me to read. The NIV is handicapped by the committee of experts that let their theologies drive some word choices. If you use a Vine's or a Strong's look up specific words, you find that the words fit, but sometimes they picked a word that doesn't fit the context as well as some others. Translation can be tricky, and we don't have the authors around to ask about the ideas conveyed by specific words and phrases, so that allows a little wiggle room in some cases.
I will compare several versions to see how they word some phrases. Don't discount the amplified version, as it often brings out nuances that are in the original language but don't make it past the translators.
I like the Geneva Bible. It was the first English version. Before the King James version.
