User u/mjs001 is correct - the standard contingency fee is 1/3, but on more complex (or riskier) cases, they could easily demand 50% or more. I'm guessing that in the current 'court climate', they figured this was a risky case.
'Contingency' means the lawyers worked for free (or close), and won't get paid unless they win. Therefore, it's risky.
