My closest guess would be "died suddenly", possibly someone involved in the Trump prosecution. Or maybe someone higher unrelated.

Perhaps a deep fake invasion of Taiwan by China?

Somehow make the DS believe they have won, then pull the rug. Demoralise them by demonstrating control.
