ironically, if they had hit the iceberg head-on, they might have been able to limp the rest of the way home.
It's been a while since I've looked into this, so feel free to fact-check me, but the titanic had five separate hull segments, each separated from one another, to prevent such an accident. if they had smashed into the iceberg head-on, the forward hull would had been lost, but the buoyancy of the other four, in theory at least, would have been able to keep the ship afloat, but because they turned at the last minute, the iceberg actually tore holes in four (three?) of the five hulls, causing them to fill with water, which eventually led to the ship sinking.
I saw a documentary on Discovery Channel that showed ships coming in to port that hit icebergs head-on during their journey. Captains now know this is the best strategy if contact with an iceberg is unavoidable.
They say "iceberg", so I believe "iceberg"!
