I’ve heard some estimates up to 40% or more.
Research has by and large been concentrated, with a few exceptions, to universities, and or private corporations. The Corporations usually sit on any truly interesting or groundbreaking research to maintain a competitive edge. The Universities are usually the ones who release the papers most people see. And they’ve gone to great pains to encourage an assembly line process. With Professors having quotas and various other goals to meet. Including political ones.
Why it's really hard to argue with "ThE sCiEnCe" crowd. Because their entire academic system is corrupted.
