I see your very good point but still, it’s been my observation that many people walk, run, whatever in the wild while completely distracted looking at phones, lost in tunes etc. People need to wake up and be a lot more aware and have a plan. Don’t assume it’s never going to happen in “nice” neighborhoods.
And parking lots- get your keys ready (if needed) before you even leave the store or bldg. Secure your purse next to body and packages in one hand so you have the other free, walk with purpose, eyes open, get off your phone, haul ass, secure your stuff quickly while keeping your head up observing the area. Super pet peeve of mine. Sit and watch how distracted people are at the next opp. It will blow your mind.
Yeah you’re right that people’s situational awareness needs improvement. Looking down at phones is pretty annoying to me too. I guess I was a little personally miffed because I go running in public parks or tracks about every other day and almost always listen to ear buds, but I maintain awareness. One night I was running a 10k around the track of my high school, with my car in the stadium’s parking lot. I saw a group of four punks stroll through the parking lot. While I was at the far end of the track, one of them looked in my windows and then tried the door handle. Without pausing my run tracker ap or music, I changed to an intercept course and sprinted off the track right at them and closed the 200 meter distance in short time. As I got closer I shouted something about messing with my car and they just about shit themselves as they ran away to the 55 mph highway. They made a car with right of way slam on the brakes to avoid hitting them as they desperately crossed. I almost felt bad about that, but it was pretty pathetic for four of them to run away from me after I sprinted 200 m after I was already about five miles deep into my 6.22 mile run.
A little but even more annoying than parking lot punks are the commie stalkers who come onto the track supposedly to mall-walk but really just to mess with you. AC’s advice is to play dumb so the ear buds fit the bill

Carry a weapon. Train to use it. When attacked, attack the attacker!
I don't get why the attorney who had a gun didn't just shoot this fucker when he turned on him. How did he manage to get knocked down?
Because he knows what happens when you use your right to defend yourself in a communist shit.
She was out for a run. No one goes for a run packing heat.
Yeah we do. I’ve got a gun just for this. It’s my cheapest gun too. You can get a .380 for under $300 easy.
Waistband running belt, 380, keys and ID.
If you think no one does, you’re wrong and if people think it’s impractical, it’s not and city runners are going to need to learn to adapt.
what about the legal fees when you actually have to use it? .>.300$US, guaranteed.

That was intense!
