Essentially Army/Marine snipers are part of the Platoon/Company/Battalion and go out with the normal grunts in an overwatch capacity. Ergo, the normal grunts have a potent asset watching thier asses and is also counter-sniper when the event arises (and it always does).
With whats going to happen now, is that capacity is being removed from being part of the Platoon/Company/Battalion and being re-designated to a Special Operation role instead.
What this means is the normal grunts no longer have a Sniper in their midst while on mission, or even in the chain of command. Not good. Army/Marines have had Snipers with them for as long as we've been a country...
So, yes they are being removed from the standard role they've been in for over 200 years. No, in that they are being redesignated and not totally done away with....but may as well be in a Grunts eyes.
That's weird. Honestly, as I am not involved, I have no idea how that actually changes things as it pertains to actual warfare.
