There used to be six-fingered aliens, so the rumor goes.
So perhaps those are behind it.
Or if not six-fingered aliens, then perhaps a family so inbred (almost like the Hapsburgs) that it produces lots of six-fingered people.
Apparently it's a dominant gene. I met a man who was born with six fingers, but his family decided to cut off the extras when he was very small. You could see the extra space on his hands still.
