I wonder if this could happen if the pilot had programmed the return route in the autopilot ahead of time. So the crew is incapacitated by whatever - the plane flies to the destination but the pilot doesn't land so since the first waypoint was achieved so the autopilot moved on to the next waypoint.
The plane just turned around and was heading home but ran out of fuel and crashed.
