Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
That electroshock sample is hilarious. Orblivion is definitely one of their best IMO. SALT - good grief. And of course when they let loose with Toxygene live, holy shit....
I was in PHX for a couple years myself, got lots of stuff at Zia - mainly records for like a buck that one song is good on. (Swell was my go-to for underground stuff - I forget which other ones there were but one was sort of trancier/not as much good stuff - Plastik maybe??? And I either didn't know about London West or it wasn't open yet or was already closed.)
Did you live in Phoenix in the '90s? I first heard Orb's "Little Fluffy Clouds" on KUKQ1060AM and they would play that a lot on that station.
Late 90s - like 1998-2001. So I unfortunately just missed I think the peak of Phoenix rave culture etc.
Now, I am friends with DJ Emile, still stay in touch occasionally on Fakebooc or whatever - so I did get to see Bombshelter when they were doing the basement bar gig in Tempe during the above time period.
(For those unaware, Bombshelter was Emile, Radar - a legendary scratch technician with his own unique style, and Z-Trip, who is now actually Big and stuff so you may have actually heard of him.)
Edit: I will add, Emile is still one of the best DJs ever in my opinion. Not necessarily technically though he's fine there, but in terms of approach, mixing whatever with whatever, not giving a fuck about songs being remotely the same BPM if he wants, etc etc. His rants are also epic both in person and in print.
I was born and raised in Arizona. I graduated ASU West in '99, proposed to my girlfriend in Japan in January 2000, then later that year started a job in Japan. Moved back from 2002-2012, and I've been back in Japan ever since. Zia's Records is such a strong nostalgic factor for my coming of age. At Zia's I bought vinyl lettering stickers of band names for the back window of my old, beat up car I drove. There were some other places in the East Valley area like Rockaway Records and Tracks In Wax, and maybe one other place I cannot remember the name of. Oh yes, and Bookmans! Damn, I loved going there.
I also learned about what I consider the best Mexican cuisine there. Sonoran. Los Olivos in Scottsdale, and Mi Amigos. OMFG. When I went back after moving away and went to Mi Amigos I was actually shocked at how much better the Mexican food there is than almost anywhere else (at least in the US; I have not been to Mexico itself). Los Dos Molinos was another favorite (and those oil tanker margs - I actually drove home???).
New Mexico/Santa Fe is nice (and CO is nowhere, basically Tex-Mex) but holy shit Sonoran is the bomb.
