Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Does anyone else here hate compulsive travelers and travel culture?
The fixation my generation has on travel, bucket lists, globe trotting, really confuse me.
I like short, three hour roadtrips. Post Q new Republic I want to see every single US state
But the idea you haven't lived if you haven't swam with pigs in the carribean or walked with elephants in Malaysia or whatever..that mentality really disturbs me
The farthest I've been was to Ireland from Boston. I did not swim with dolphins or walk with elephants, I drank Guiness with my ancestors and was glad to set foot on the ground my people came from, but that was enough for me. I am such a homebody for a long time. It has never been economically feasible , so living within my means keeps me out of a lot of cultural trends, like vacationing far away in comfort. I have no regrets though, I live in a beautiful place, I can read and see things on line. Can't wander far from the homestead, there are critters that rely on me, also. I don't like cities, if I need to mingle with animals I can go to the barn and feed my goats an apple or two, hang out with horses at my friend's house, get take out Thai not too far from here, (and not get a deadly illness or hustled, not stand in line then mob around a crowd to see the mona lisa for a minute, or get bed bugs!
a lot of it is cover for sex tourism
