Orwell was indeed connected, at least at a low level. He was a socialist soldier who fought on the side of Marxists during the Spanish civil war when he was young, and dumb.
But, he was also smart enough to see first hand how the real socialist schtick wasn't what the propaganda he was exposed to was selling. Later in life, he put the pieces together.

His wife worked in the censorship department in the ministry of information. He worked for the BBC for two years. He experienced communism and the propaganda of war.

This is easy and anyone could have written 1984. The scum, criminal/rich/would be kings will always attempt to Rule over the people and always Have. 1984 was written in England, where the sheep are disarmed (So the criminals CAN rule over them) and History shows every Gov. that disarms the citizen, then KILLS THEM by the millions. That worked, right up until the US Constitution made sure ALL Americans can be well armed. 1984 is now a delusional communist dream. There is NO force that can Rule over 100 Million Armed Americans. You will ask 'when'? When THEY cause anarchy, the Law abiding will have NO laws holding them back either.
