Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Why Don't Americans All Use Solar Water Heaters?

Here in Greece my system cost around $600 plus $50 to hire the crane lorry to lift it onto the flat roof plus $100 for the plumber and his mate to install it. It's so efficient that in summer I have to cover half of the panel, otherwise the water boils and blows the pressure relief valve.
It includes an electric immersion heater, which we use occasionally on overcast winter days.
Well, having grown up in South Florida: wind storms. Now I'm in North Carolina: trees. Lol
Gotta love those pines that snap out😕 We grow em tall in NC.
We bought land that had a lot of trees and at first we were disappointed that there were few pines among them. I think the phrase is, bless our hearts? Lol! Of course, now we know better.
Glad it worked out for you with less pines. Oh yeah "bless your heart" has multiple meanings. I grew up with the tall pines in my yard and my grandparents had them. I think my house had more because my parents built on an acre in the woods and didn't clear as much. By the time I was old enough to carry a bucket I had to pick up pine cones and sticks every Saturday morning. I appreciate their beauty but don't want them in my yard. My grandfather had all his cut down after a tree fell on his house during a hurricane. I got lucky because I bought one of the houses and don't have trees. Plenty of woods with them.
