This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.

Well pedes, it's my birthday, and I'm depressed.
I don't have any friends left IRL and life has been pretty rough these last few years. I always thought I'd have my own house and a family by now but I can barely keep a roof over my own head. I confess it's mostly my fault. I let one traffic ticket go to default because I was homeless and didn't have an address so missed the court date, got my license suspended and then pulled over for driving after suspension, tried to keep a job to pay the reinstatement fees but getting more driving after suspension tickets in the process, enough that I had to leave the state, and even then a year later they decided I had so many driving after suspensions that they needed to slap me with another court date to upgrade me to a habitual offender.
But they didn't know that I moved, so I missed that court date too. Only found out when I was at the office to try and take the test again (because it's been so long since I've had a valid license) that they told me I still had some hang ups, so I had to call my old state and find out they suspended me again and I needed to request a new hearing, which I had to wait another month for, told the administrator (not judge) "WTF is this about I never hurt or damaged anyone why can't you assholes just leave me alone?" (in kinder words). Waited another 31 days (the maximum allowed by statute) for a decision, where they said I had to pay another reinstatement fee, and get a special type of insurance, but I don't have a registered car to insure, so it is to insure me personally, because I'm considered "high risk" now apparently.
So I've been working at a restaurant and living in a basement for the past two years dealing with this bullshit and my only outlet has been this board, and my little project, which at least I have finally made progress on and that's what I really want to tell you about.
I've put together a private community chat server that's built on all open source software. You can remain fully anonymous and private chats are encrypted. I am kind of a privacy nut and I just built what I wish existed but no other platform offers that right now and I felt this community would appreciate some grassroots webdev. I have some ideas brewing for future feature additions but right now I just want people to check it out and leave a comment and/or send me a DM if you feel inclined:

I did my best to make the signup process as easy and intuitive as possible. Click the big 'Join' button in the middle of the page and just enter a username and email. Once you get to the community homepage, click the portal looking icon in the top right to access the Matrix chat. The whole thing should be seamless but if you run into issues let me know below.
If nothing goes wrong, DM me there.

I also am working at a restaurant the last 2 years (just upgraded to a nice one thank God)... I don't know if these liberal tech companies are using some sort of Political ID software but I have not landed a decent tech job in years.
This is the way, making it ourselves, I'm partnering with some young copy writers and starting a marketing oriented tech company, just web dev, SEO and static assets, including ecommerce services.
So far only have 1 customer, but we are just getting started.

The project is based on WordPress, Discourse, and Matrix. Each of those is on GitHub. I might try to make some custom plugins at some point.
Absolutely the more people I can work with the better, I work tonight but we should chat up soon. It's awesome what you made, I'm going to look into Discourse and Matrix. I've never heard of them.
You write php? Do you know JavaScript?

I'm not a hardcore coder but I've done some bash scripting and other simple stuff. I've been playing with chatgpt and its coding ability and it's actually pretty amazing so that's my little cheat for when I can't figure something out.
