You are confusing Rus with Russia. A group from Rus broke away and travelled east and were called Moskovites from Rus, later named Russia. The original Rus didnt want affiliation with the new Russians so they renamed Ukraina which means country on the edge of (Europe and Asia) and made Keiv their capital.

They were never catholics. They were Chalcedonians.
