Even in "right to work" states, many unions can negotiate "fair share" clauses into contracts which basically means anyone covered by the collective bargaining agreement has to pay the dues even if they choose to not be in union.
Yep, I took a job at a big company ,with a big union once. Company HR slid a piece of paper across the table that signed me up for the union and deducted dues from my pay. I said I did not want to join the union. He said it wasn't a choice.
