Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
For your next post can you cover candles? i have been doing pretty hard research which is coming to the conclusion even an expensive candle is not good healthwise...
But candles have been around millenia...it seems weird to think they are horribly bad for us. I want to think their effect on mood and stress outweighs the cons
There are good safe non toxic candles out there it just takes effort to find them. Spireside is a good candle company. The hardest thing is relying on scent description and customer reviews. Most people like floral, woodsy or fruity scents. I lean more towards woodsy and earthy scents. If you know what essential oils you like it's very helpful. I've ordered a couple from Spireside I didn't like and gave to my dad. He'll burn anything. This company is very secretive about the scent profile because people will steal recipes. I also order from a few smaller companies on Etsy.

The problem with toxic candles is the same old story, cutting costs using cheaper ingredients. Yankee brand and those in department stores, Walmart, target, etc have very toxic ingredients. The old ways of making good clean candles have been making a comeback. Candles ain't cheap but I'll pay for them because I once tried to make candles🤦🏻♀️ Just one of my failures spilled hot wax on the counter top and floor. It splattered everywhere.
Look for soy, coconut or bees wax. Fragranced using essential oils. There's natural fragrances many people use and they are safer than toxic mass produced candles. I prefer essential oil as fragrance because I have allergies and sensitive to fake fragrances.
Also candles made with vegetable shortening.
Haven't heard of these candles.
They work very well, and they can be recycled just as well as beeswax candles.
