I've always questioned the whole "calls from the planes" part of the stories from that day. I didn't think cell phones worked when up in the air on jets, at least not back in 2001. Can anyone provide a reasonable explanation of how it could have been possible back then?

Onboard phones were years later.
Onboard phones were created in the '70s and certainly were on a bunch of planes in the '90s.

Yeah I remember the onboard phones on jumbo jets in the early 90s.
There was onboard phones on high end luxury cars im the 80s, you think a commercial airliner in 2001 wont have one?
