I know what you mean. I thought the saying - God helps those who help themselves- was a Bible verse until I was in my 30s and someone challenged me to find it in the Bible. That was a humbling experience because I was being pretty obnoxious and insisting it was in there.

That second one sure can cause a lot of drama when it's brought up, can't it? It's probably the most controversial Bible verse in modern times.

Most of the Bible is the word of man, not the word of God. So that doesn't really touch on why it's so controversial.
