A LOT of those j6 prisoners were proudboys and oathkeepers who actually went to j6 with the intent, and who acted on that intent, of inciting a kinetic civil war. They have confessed to this directly, and have been found guilty on that.
Others, like Chansley, are a different case, however.

He went with MTG and another congressman specifically to see the prisoners and some fat guard shooed them out of the lobby and then locked them out.
