I think we can rest assured that billions of $$$ have been poured into researching why humans do what they do. Some of it started out in the 1950s as a way of selling more products and it expanded from there. To a certain mindset, it's always worthwhile knowing how to better manipulate people to get them to do what you want while you expend minimum effort.
But do notice how things have sped up over the past few years, between the collapse of one narrative and the rise of the next. I believe that's because of what's happening here - more online discussion. Things get pulled apart in a matter of days now. The Old Guard are flailing, desperately trying to get their ideas to stick but having less success.
They are still in the mode of when they controlled the three networks, and confused about why their brainwashing no longer works. DS wasn't even aware of the anons on the internet during 2016. I easily found information about pizzagate and everything else via Google up until the election. Then, clamp-down. Online censorship. But the cat was out of the bag.

Whatever they can do to cause fear and use it to control you they will do. With fear they can undermine logic and run the printers at full speed with no questions.
Aliens were too ridiculous but if that were to stick they could ramp up endless spending for alien weapons, alien defense, space travel etc ... none of that spending would have produced anything but you would get your feel good comfort out of knowing we are doing something.
