Governments and utilities need to add or replace the equivalent of virtually all the world’s power grids by 2040 to reliably keep the lights on while cleaning up pollution from the power sector. That’s 80 million kilometers (nearly 50 million miles) of infrastructure that needs a major upgrade, according to a first-of-its-kind report released by the International Energy Agency (IEA) today.
Yes, this is a Climate Emergency!tm screed, but in fact, as we all know, the Grid is NOT up to the task of keeping the lights on while also replacing gasoline and diesel fuel for transportation. It's not really up to the task of just staying on reliably today, as things are.

Well they do need an overhaul any way you slice it. The amount of absolutely ancient and or just poorly maintained equipment in Americas power grid alone would probably boggle the mind if we could get reasonably.
Hell. There are some parts of the lower 48 in the United States that have never had electricity. Let alone Running Water in current year. We should probably work on that first.

Those big overhead power lines are always running at near 100% capacity. If they get too hot, then they sag and strands break. Reducing capacity. Then the strands have to be fixed. Often by two crazy guys in a helicopter. And one of them crawls out onto the cable and fixes it. While the power is still on. Special suit.
