I personally watched this guy throw a folding chair across a basketball floor during a game. He was one of kind. RIP Bobby.
I watched it as well! In real time!
I as well. Live on TV. I knew Ted Kitchel, he was gone by then. But Ted told us quite a bit, so I got addicted to watching Bobby and his antics. He was an odd duck. Some of the crap he pulled on the players and around IU was pretty crazy.
I don't look at that as ever defining the legacy Bobby Knight left at IU though. It's sad that the media was out to hang Bobby Knight and this was the incident used to destroy an incredible coach.
Through my many years, I've watched many coaches having uncharacteristic displays of impassioned angst and loosing it that they soon regretted. In particular, I remember OSU football coach Woody Hayes punching the opposing team player after intercepting the ball. That so-called punch, if you can call it that, ended his career and legacy at OSU. Michigan head basketball coach Juwan Howard did the same when he threw a punch and hit a WI assistant coach. There was even a previous altercation that Howard was involved in. The precedent of Howard's inappropriate acts compared to Bobby Knight and Woody Hayes was far worse. Yet, Juwan Howard was not immediately fired, but suspended.
Bobby Knight did far less than that....
After a technical foul called on Bobby Knight, the players all went to the other end of the court and this is when coach Knight threw a plastic chair across the gym floor with no one near. By the time the chair reached the other side of the gym, it's momentum had greatly slowed and was stopped by waiting hands. The media used it as a feeding frenzy that ended Knight's career at IU.
It's a damn shame.....the University of Indiana has never been the same without him.
Me too, against Purdue.
