Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
Not bad. Have you heard of the "Anti-Destination League"? If not, or for those going Huh, Car And Driver magazine came up with this - I think Brock Yates* specifically IIRC - basically, other drivers on the road who occupy the left lane at The Speed Limit Because We Are Saving Somebody's Lives etc.
*The guy who "organized" the real-life Cannonball Run
In driver safety class, decades ago, the officer teaching it told us about a stop he had that he went to court to defend his position. Judge ruled with the officer. The officer had cited someone for impeding traffic in the left lane for going the speed limit. The officer stated the left lane was a passing lane & that it shouldn't be used for speed limited traffic, that he expected others to travel 10 MPH over the legal limit in that lane to pass those on the right.
My first job in CO, a coworker said to be sure not to hang in the left lane, because the state patrol will pull you over - they did him even though he was going over the limit.
I am certain he's one of three people since 1905 that can bitch about this happening to them.
Also that weird don't turn right on a red law. Visitors get fined for that all the time.
This is hilarious. And I know for a fact neither you or I are in that lane.! 😂🤣
Usually not, you have to pass the bastards on the right
Edit: Back when I was in CA, I-5 was so bad about LLBs the right lane would actually usually be clear except for semis, so I'd blast by say 10 or 20 cars, then have to get in line to creep past the semi, then resume. CO, the above statement about "bastards" actually often does not work, because everyone spreads out into an even blob here - which is actually way worse - it's often not worth trying to inch your way forward unless you can see the front of the blob/clear space in front of it, and even then it will take awhile.
I was born and raised in Southern California, that’s why I learn to drive. People who say a lot about traffic in LA, however, generally if it’s not rush hour, it’s always moving. I have no problem doing exactly what you explain, just to get to where you need to go. It helps when you have a vehicle that when you step on it, it will actually go. 😂🤣. Ohhhh the I5. Fond memories.
When I was living in Huntington Beach, my dad was living in the valley. Every other week and I would go visit him. Are used to try to beat my own time. The best time I got was 43 minutes. Woo hoo! And obviously that was not using the 405. 😂🤣
LOL another story regarding best times. It's been too long so I don't remember the numbers, but when I went back to school for programming, I did so in Klamath Falls, OR. So I had the elsewhere-mentioned 944 as a college car, but as someone who could actually afford to do so LOL.
So the drive from KF to Ashland is world-class. Like why sports cars. Now, I also taught community college as my side gig going back to school, basic algebra. I mentioned how I'd driven KF -> Ashland at (something like) 45 minutes (or whatever, but a noticeable percent from normal) and this one gal in the class was just open-mouthed. She said "what kind of car do you have?" I said, a Subaru, because this was technically true.
"if it's not rush hour, it's always moving"
EXACTLY. CA ppl seem to figure out how to keep things moving.
CO people go up each other's ass at the first opportunity so it's instant constipation.
"best time" - at this time I was going back and forth betw my apt in PHX (laid off) and my friend's house in south bay (I was trying to get a job and move there, but in a recession), and I had a 944. A decent time for this was around 11 hours. I made it PHX -> south bay (Santa Clara? It's been a couple minutes.) one time in 10.
