I believe several hundred thousand died, of typhus and starvation, largely caused by Allied railroad bombing. The Red Cross seemed to agree at the time as did the world census.
Don't forget the caravans of civilians following the German army as they exited the Eastern Front. Tens of thousands fled the approaching Red Army. The only ones who stayed were either willingly tovarich or partisans who would fight, die, or get sent into Russian work camps.
Work & prison camps turned into refugee camps is a more accurate description. It reflects the original IRT numbers.
