Johnson was the guy they wanted in but he was unelectable, IMO. They cheated to get their guy (Johnson) in position "a heartbeat away from the Presidency", then took out JFK once he started becoming a threat to the DS.

E Howard Hunt seemed to say Johnson was the key man in that assassination (as per his death bed confession to his son)
